A/C diagnosis - reading the gauges

Manifold gauges only mean something as a pair. A low side reading low is not a diagnosis on its own; paired with the high side it becomes one. Learn the handful of patterns and most A/C faults identify themselves in about a minute.

The cycle in four moves

The compressor raises the pressure and temperature of the vapour. The condenser sheds that heat and the refrigerant turns liquid. The metering device drops the pressure sharply. In the evaporator that low-pressure liquid boils, absorbing heat from the cabin.

Every gauge reading is a report on one of those four moves. Cold is never created - heat is moved out - which is why condenser airflow matters as much as charge level.

Read the pair, not the number

Low on both sides usually means undercharge, or a restriction upstream of the evaporator. High on both usually means overcharge, air in the system, or poor condenser airflow.

Low side high with high side low is the classic weak or bypassing compressor. Low side very low, sometimes pulling into vacuum, with a low high side points at a blockage - a plugged orifice tube or a stuck expansion valve.

609 is not optional

Venting refrigerant is illegal. Recovery equipment and EPA Section 609 certification are required to open a system, and that certification does not expire once earned.

In practice: recover before opening, evacuate to boil off moisture and prove the system holds vacuum, then charge by weight. Charging by gauge feel is how systems end up overcharged and cooling badly.

How to test it

  1. Verify the basicsCondenser airflow, cabin filter, belt, compressor engaging. Half of poor-cooling complaints end here.
  2. Connect the manifoldEngine at operating temperature, A/C on max, blower high, doors open.
  3. Read both sides togetherMatch the pair against the patterns below instead of judging one gauge alone.
  4. Check vent temperatureCompare against ambient. The gauges tell you why; the vent tells you whether it is actually working.
  5. Recover, evacuate, charge by weightNever top up by feel - the correct charge is a weight printed on the underhood label.

Common mistakes

  • Topping up by gauge feel instead of charging the labelled weight.
  • Diagnosing from one gauge - a low reading means nothing without its partner.
  • Skipping evacuation, leaving moisture that turns acidic and destroys the compressor.
  • Condemning parts before checking a blocked condenser or a clogged cabin filter.
