NFPA 1901 and 1911 are now NFPA 1900 and 1910
The short version: in 2024 NFPA folded its emergency-vehicle standards into two books. NFPA 1900 is for new vehicles and took in 1901, 1906, 1917 and 414. NFPA 1910 is for vehicles in service and took in 1911, 1912, 1925 and 1071.
Old number to new number
| Old standard | What it covered | Now part of |
|---|---|---|
| NFPA 414 | Aircraft rescue and fire-fighting vehicles | NFPA 1900 |
| NFPA 1901 | Automotive fire apparatus | NFPA 1900 |
| NFPA 1906 | Wildland fire apparatus | NFPA 1900 |
| NFPA 1917 | Automotive ambulances | NFPA 1900 |
| NFPA 1911 | Inspection, maintenance, testing and retirement of in-service emergency vehicles | NFPA 1910 |
| NFPA 1912 | Fire apparatus refurbishing | NFPA 1910 |
| NFPA 1925 | Marine fire-fighting vessels | NFPA 1910 |
| NFPA 1071 | Emergency vehicle technician professional qualifications | NFPA 1910 |
NFPA 1900 is about new vehicles: how they are designed and built. Its full title is Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicles, Automotive Fire Apparatus, Wildland Fire Apparatus, and Automotive Ambulances. NFPA 1900 on nfpa.org
NFPA 1910 is about vehicles in service: inspecting, maintaining, refurbishing, testing and retiring them. Its full title is Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Refurbishment, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Emergency Vehicles and Marine Firefighting Vessels. NFPA 1910 on nfpa.org

How to keep them straight
- 1900 is how it is built. If the question is about what a new pumper, aerial or ambulance has to have, it came from 1901 or 1917 and now lives in 1900.
- 1910 is how it is kept. If the question is about inspecting, servicing, testing or retiring a rig that is already on the road, it came from 1911 and now lives in 1910.
- The pair people get backwards: 1911 did not become 1900. 1911 went into 1910. 1901 went into 1900.
The old standards did not vanish. EVTCC's exam descriptions point to them as chapters of the new ones — “NFPA 1900 … (NFPA 1901 Chapters)” — so what you learned under the old numbers is the right place to start. The 2024 editions also made changes of their own, so study from the edition your test names.
Which EVT tests use which standard
This is what EVTCC's own description of each test names. Tests not listed here have descriptions that do not name an NFPA standard.
| EVT test | EVTCC says it covers |
|---|---|
| F1Maintenance, Inspection & Testing | NFPA 1910 (the NFPA 1911 chapters). |
| F2Design & Performance Standards | NFPA 1900 (the NFPA 1901 chapters). |
| F3Fire Pumps & Accessories | NFPA 1900 (the 1901 chapters) and NFPA 1910 (the 1911 chapters). EVTCC notes this test draws from the 2024 editions. |
| F5Aerial Fire Apparatus | NFPA 1900 (the 1901 chapters) and NFPA 1910 (the 1911 chapters). EVTCC notes this test draws from the 2024 editions. |
| DO1Driver/Operator Inspection | NFPA 1910 (the NFPA 1911 chapters). |
| E0Maintenance, Inspection & Testing | NFPA 1910 (the NFPA 1911 chapters), with Meritor's preventive maintenance and lubrication manual. |
| E1Ambulance Design & Performance | NFPA 1900 (the NFPA 1917 chapters). |
| GLGround Ladder Testing | NFPA 1931 and NFPA 1932, the ground-ladder standards, under their own numbers. Its March 2026 reference sheet cites them as chapters of NFPA 1960 and NFPA 1930. |

Questions about the change
What replaced NFPA 1901?
NFPA 1900, first published as a 2024 edition. It combines NFPA 1901 with NFPA 414 (aircraft rescue and fire-fighting vehicles), NFPA 1906 (wildland fire apparatus) and NFPA 1917 (automotive ambulances).
What replaced NFPA 1911?
NFPA 1910, first published as a 2024 edition. It combines NFPA 1911 with NFPA 1912 (fire apparatus refurbishing), NFPA 1925 (marine fire-fighting vessels) and NFPA 1071 (emergency vehicle technician professional qualifications).
What is the difference between NFPA 1900 and NFPA 1910?
NFPA 1900 covers new vehicles: how they are designed and built. NFPA 1910 covers vehicles in service: inspecting, maintaining, refurbishing, testing and retiring them.
Did NFPA 1911 become NFPA 1900?
No. NFPA 1911 became part of NFPA 1910. NFPA 1900 is the one that took in NFPA 1901. It is the easiest pair to get backwards.
What happened to NFPA 1917, the ambulance standard?
It is now part of NFPA 1900. EVTCC describes its E1 ambulance test as covering NFPA 1900, the NFPA 1917 chapters.
Do the EVT tests use the new NFPA numbers?
EVTCC's current exam descriptions cite NFPA 1900 and NFPA 1910, and say the F3 and F5 tests draw from the 2024 editions. The ground ladder test's description still names NFPA 1931 and 1932, but its reference sheet cites them as chapters of NFPA 1960 and NFPA 1930. The reference sheet for your test lists the exact documents.
