Finding a parasitic draw
A truck that starts fine all day and is dead Monday morning is almost always a parasitic draw. The test is simple, but it fails for one reason more than any other: people do not wait for the modules to go to sleep, read 3 amps, and start pulling fuses on a circuit that was never awake to begin with.
Let it sleep first
Modern trucks keep dozens of modules powered. After the doors are shut and the key is out, they stay awake monitoring for a while, then time out one by one into a low-power state.
Until that finishes, current draw is high and meaningless. Depending on the vehicle it can take from 20 minutes to well over an hour. Watch the reading fall in steps as each module drops off, and only start diagnosing once it settles.
Keep the circuit closed
Opening the battery connection to insert your meter wakes everything back up, and the clock starts again. Worse, on some vehicles it resets adaptive memory.
Use a jumper across your leads that you remove only after the meter is connected, or use a purpose-made draw tester. Do not open a door, or you have started over.
Pull fuses to halve the problem
With a settled reading, pull one fuse at a time and watch the meter. When the number drops by roughly the amount you are chasing, that circuit contains the fault.
Note that pulling some fuses will wake modules back up. Give the reading a moment to resettle before deciding, and put each fuse back before moving to the next.
How to test it
- Prep the vehicleKey out, doors shut, everything off. Use the door latch trick or a jumper so the cab thinks it is closed while you work.
- Connect in seriesMeter in the A range, in line with the disconnected battery negative, with a jumper in parallel so the circuit never opens.
- Remove the jumper and waitNow the current runs through the meter. Wait for sleep — 20 to 60 minutes, longer on some chassis.
- Compare to specRead the settled draw against the limits below.
- Pull fuses one at a timeWatch for the drop. Reinstall each before moving on, and allow the reading to resettle.

Common mistakes
- Reading before the modules sleep, then chasing a draw that does not exist.
- Opening the circuit to connect the meter and restarting the sleep timer without noticing.
- Using a clamp meter for a 40 mA draw — it is below the clamp's usable floor.
- Forgetting aftermarket additions. Radios, light bars, cameras and trackers are the usual culprits on apparatus.
