Starter circuit diagnosis
Slow cranking has three common causes — the battery, the cables, or the starter — and they produce nearly identical symptoms. Two voltage drop measurements taken while cranking separate them in about a minute.
What the click tells you
A single loud click with no rotation usually means the solenoid pulled in but the motor did not turn — a dead spot, a seized engine, or a feed problem downstream of the solenoid.
Rapid machine-gun clicking is almost always insufficient current: a flat battery or a bad connection. The solenoid pulls in, voltage collapses, it drops out, voltage recovers, and it repeats.
Voltage drop while cranking
This is the test that separates cable faults from starter faults. Measure across the positive cable, battery post to starter stud, while cranking. Then across the ground path, engine block to battery negative.
Either side over about half a volt is a cable or connection fault. Both sides good, battery good, and still slow means the starter itself.
Current draw
Clamp the main cable while cranking. Draw far above spec means a binding starter or a mechanical drag in the engine. Far below spec, with slow cranking, means high resistance is choking it.

How to test it
- Verify the batteryCharged and capacity tested. Everything downstream is meaningless otherwise.
- Measure cranking voltageAt the battery posts while cranking. Should stay above about 9.6 V.
- Drop the feed sideBattery positive to starter stud, cranking. Under 0.5 V.
- Drop the ground sideEngine block to battery negative, cranking. Under 0.5 V.
- Clamp the drawCompare to spec for the engine type.

Common mistakes
- Replacing a starter without dropping the cables first — the most common wasted repair in this circuit.
- Testing with a battery that is merely charged rather than capacity tested.
- Ignoring the ground side, which fails as often as the feed.
- Missing a heat-soak fault that only appears on a hot restart.
